Cynthia Cummings
Founding Dancer/Advisory Committee
Cynthia Cummings is a “Bed-Stuy, Do or Die” native of Brooklyn, NY. She began the study of dance at five years of age because she had fallen arches. Her dance training began at the renowned New Dance Group in New York City where she studied classical ballet and pointe with Celine Keller. Over years of training, she was exposed to a plethora of dance forms. This exposure piqued her interest in modern dance as she continued to perform in high school. While in college, she performed with Jerome Young in the Cornell Dance Group and continued her appreciation for the performing arts, studying Modern, African, and Haitian dance with Dianne McIntyre, Charles Moore and Noel Hall.
Cynthia was a committed student when Audrey Madison taught modern jazz dance classes at Charles Moore’s dance school. Cynthia was the first to sign up when Audrey started teaching her own independent classes. And Cynthia was a founding member of MoJazz Dance, which was conceived in 1995, with the union of spirited women of like-mindedness who yearned to perform. These women became her extended family long after Cynthia married her musical heart throb, Richard. They have two daughters, Diarra and Imani and two granddaughters. Cynthia is the Executive Director of a non-profit organization, Community Parents, Inc., for which she has worked thirty-two years. “Dance uplifts my spirit, my soul, to heights that are closest to God!”
